Hospital fun

While Mom was in the hospital we spent plenty of time visiting. Luckily she was in the new Diamond wing of UMC which had been designed mainly for kids, except for the floor she was on, so Rachel had a ball playing. She would often come visit Grandma, then after a few minutes when she was bored Grandpa, or sometimes Jake if he was there, would take her to play. They had a library, a train, a dinosaur wall, and a few other things.

The coolest part was by far this wall that had an image projected on it, and motion sensors, so when you got close it responded to you. It rotated through several different images. There were kites for the kids to pretend to hold, and they would follow the kids, there was a wall of butterflies and a different one of lizards that would scatter when you would try to get close to "catch" them. There was a fog that would clear away so you could see when you got near, and there was a deer that would run by you, and if you got too far ahead or behind it would stop and look around until you came back close by. It was so cool. Here's a little video of Rachel at it:

Since the move from UMC into the rehab center at St. Joe's Rachel's visits are a lot shorter since the room is shared, so there's not as much room to just hang out and there's nothing cool to keep her occupied. But Annie still accompanies me most of the time. Mom hates that she can't hold her since that would be "bearing weight" on her arms, which is not allowed for several more weeks. This is as close as she's gotten lately:
Not too long and she'll be holding Annie to build her arm strength back up (Annie is getting to be quite the chunker). When she gets LOTS of muscles maybe she'll start lifting Jared to exercise those arms. Savannah and Jared, are coming back to Tucson in January to help out when Mom gets to go home. Todd will come, too, probably, when he can arrange his work so he can work remotely. Mom will do anything to get her grandkids to come visit, I guess. ;)

Grandpa and Grandma's visit

My Grandpa Jolley and his wife, Grandma Pat, came to visit for a few days. We went on a nice drive around Sahuaro National Park so Pat could see all the cacti she'd never seen before. We also went out to the San Xavier Mission. I think it was built around the 1600s and has been undergoing restoration and upkeep pretty much since then.

Rachel liked the statues of various saints because they were just her size. I think they're there for praying to, not hugging, but since we're not really the pray to statues kind of people, she went for the hug.

We had a real fun time and we're glad they came to visit! Unfortunately their visit ended on a down note with Mom in the hospital, but at least they were around to help out with Rachel when we needed that, and were able to visit Mom in the hospital before they had to go back home.

Family pictures

After Annie's blessing, since we had my parents there to act as photographers we had a little family photo session. Here are a few of the pictures:

I actually made up our Christmas card that we were going to send out to everyone, but before I got much farther than the digital version my mom got hit and the Christmas cards got kicked off of my to do list real fast. But here it is for your viewing pleasure:

We still love you, even though you didn't get a real Christmas card from us. Hope you all had a great Christmas!

Annie's blessing

Annie was blessed on December 5th at church. Here are some photos afterward:

Annie didn't wear this headband to get blessed in because she is not a jazzercize instructor. But it sure looks cute for a picture.

She sure is a cute and good baby. We are so blessed to have her in our family.

Swagger wagon

A few weeks ago I convinced Jake that if we were going to replace Willie (our Ford Escort) sometime in the next year, we might as well do it before our Christmas trip to Utah so we could travel in style (and with enough room to recline the passenger seat more than 2 inches because of car seats). Thus we joined the ranks of the Swagger Wagon Posse.

The only picture we have of our new car is when Jake was checking it out.

It almost looks like he decided to join my mom in the Got Run Over by a Car Club.

Our new car's name is CC (Colette's Christmas present). It was nice to have so much room for our drive up to Utah, especially with all the presents and winter clothes and baby equipment we brought.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer...

Actually, it was a big truck that ran Grandma over this year. On December 9th while my mom was on her regular morning run she was crossing the street in a crosswalk with the light and a guy was turning left and ran right into her because he didn't see her. Thankfully she is okay. She has many broken bones, including 9 ribs on the right, 5 ribs on the left, her pelvis in several places, both clavicles (shoulder bones), her right scapula (shoulder blade), right thumb, sternum, a small bone in her face, and some others. She also had a laceration in her spleen and a squished bladder (I don't remember the technical term). They fixed her spleen and she had surgery to repair her pelvis and had some hardware put in to keep it in place. At first they told us she'd probably be in the hospital for a month. She was in ICU for 4 days, then out of the hospital 4 days later, released to a rehab center where she'll be for about 3 1/2 weeks. She is a quick healer and very eager to get home so she is doing everything the doctors and physical therapists tell her to do.
There have been many tender mercies through this whole thing. First of all, the fact that she did not have any head trauma or brain injury is amazing considering all her other injuries. Then there were other little things:
1. That morning I woke up by myself--both the girls were still sleeping and I just woke up, which never happens to this sleep-deprived mom. I went into the kitchen to start getting breakfast and not 2 minutes later my cell phone, which I had accidentally left on vibrate, began buzzing. It was my dad calling to tell me about the accident. I never would have heard that had I still been asleep.
2. One of the first people who stopped to help my mom until the ambulance got there was a doctor at UMC where she ended up being taken. This woman turned out to be the anesthesiologist who helped with my mom's surgery, as well. She came by several times while my mom was at UMC to check in and see how she was doing.
3. The fact that Annie is such a good sleeper and is such an easy baby. Had this happened in a few months when Annie will be more awake and require more attention, it would have been a bit harder on me. As it was, I've been able to mostly just have Annie around and feed her when she gets hungry, then set her back in her car seat and she'll sleep away the hours until it's time for her to eat again, letting me do whatever I need to help mom out. Had this happened a couple of months earlier, it probably would have sent me into labor and I'd be out of commission for helping out at all. So I guess, if this had to happen, it was relatively good timing for me.
4. This happened the day before my Grandpa (Mom's dad) and his wife Pat were about to go back up to Idaho after visiting for a few days. They were able to watch Rachel while I went down to the hospital to be with Dad while we were waiting for more news, which was so nice. They also were able to go in and see her before they flew home the next day.
5. All the people that have helped out have made such a difference, too. Rachel has had a blast going to a different friend's house every day. We've had meals brought over which has been so nice because so many times we were walking in the door at 6 or 6:30, not even able to think about what to have for dinner, but we didn't have to because someone else had thought about that for me. I've learned about little things that make such a difference that I hope to remember to do for someone else when I get a chance. Things like dropping off a gallon of milk so I would be able to go that much longer before I had to make a trip to the store. Or having lunch ready for me when I came to pick up Rachel especially since most days I was forgetting to eat lunch until like 3:00. Or my visiting teachers coming over and helping clean my disaster of a house that otherwise wouldn't have been cleaned for quite a while. Or giving me a bag of chocolates to sustain me in those I-need-a-boost moments. People in my mom's ward, and some of her other friends even volunteered to come to the hospital to hold Annie so I could go into ICU to hang out with Mom until Annie got hungry, then I could go feed her, and go back in.
So many things to be thankful for. Most of all that my mom is so awesome and that she'll be around for years to come. It's moments like these when you come so close to losing someone you love that you really appreciate all the blessings you have. And I am very blessed.
The one regret is that I had just resolved to get caught up on blogging when this happened. Now I'm even more behind. ;) Maybe I'll have Mom do it for me with all her sitting around these days.... ;)

Santa Claus is Coming to Town!

Christmas is in the air. :) After Thanksgiving Rachel went with Jared to see if the line to visit Santa at the mall was too long. It wasn't terrible so we waited and Jared had the "pleasure" of meeting the big guy.
When Jared refused to sit on the big guy's lap, Todd stepped up to fill the vacancy. :) Rachel did much better than she did last year and gave some fake smiles for the camera:
When Santa asked what she wants for Christmas she promptly answered, "A puppy." We have tempered her expectations by talking about the toy puppy Santa's bringing.
Last weekend we had our ward Christmas party and Santa Claus showed up at the end for a little visit, too. Rachel was happy to hop up on his lap and tell him about the puppy she wants all over again. And she was especially excited that he gave her a candy cane this time.

We've been decking the halls at our house and it's about as decorated as it's going to get this year. I love having all the Christmas decorations out, mint M&Ms, and Christmas music. It really makes it feel like Christmas (even when I sweat when we go outside to play).

Rachel was a great helper in decorating the tree this year. And undecorating, and redecorating, and undecorating.... We've set some rules about which ornaments cannot be removed and she mostly leaves them alone now.

On a completely unrelated note, the other day after watching her Dora movie that she got for her birthday (which is all about pirates) Rachel came to me as I was doing the laundry and said, "Mom, I need a pirate costume." Luckily I just happened to have one on hand.

After I taught her some pirate talk ("Aarrgh. Ahoy mateys" and the like), Rachel walked around for a good while saying "Ahoy, ladies. Aarrrgh."
