June update

WARNING: long post

Since we got back from Utah for the wedding a few weeks ago we've just been chillin' out (inside in the AC, since outside the weather isn't real good for "chillin'").

We enjoy cool treats, like ice cream and popsicles often. This picture was taken when Rachel decided to name her body parts with her ice cream cone. She'd "point" to her nose and say "nose" then point to her cheek, then her ears, then her fingers, then her chin, ... you get the picture.

Two Saturday nights ago Rachel started barking while she was sleeping. Yes, our little seal had croup. The nurse told me to sleep in her room for a night or two because it can escalate quickly at night to respiratory distress. Needless to say, even with our air mattress, I didn't sleep well with all the coughing. But Rachel loved having the air mattress in her room. It was a wonderful trampoline. She's a lot better now, but still has a little lingering cough.

Saturday we decided to beat the heat and go up the mountain to the pine trees for a little hike. It was really nice--only like 85 degrees, and we enjoyed the hike, though Rachel's time limit was a little shorter than we would have liked.

She did love the backpack and was so excited to ride in it, but also loved getting down to run around a bit. She's a nature lover, I guess. She found this pinecone and picked it up and ran to me saying "Lookit, mamma. I found pinecone." (She's getting to be such a talker I am often amazed at the huge jumps in her language, like last week she started saying complete-ish sentances sometimes, like "I found pinecone" or "'ant two of 'em" (I want two of them) )

Since we've returned from Utah we've also been experimenting with potty training. Rachel has been really interested in the potty for a couple of months now and would sit on it and read, and even go potty sometimes, so we decided to see if she really was ready for it when we got back from Utah. The first week was a lot of peeing on the floor, and a little peeing in the potty, and I was thinking maybe we'd give up and try again later, but decided to give it one more week when I was really paying attention to her, instead of being distracted cleaning or working on something and not really noticing when she was needing to use the potty. The fact that she had croup and we couldn't really go anywhere because she was contagious also helped because we were forced to stay home.
She did MUCH better the second week, and last Thursday made it through the whole day with only one pee accident. Friday wasn't as good because she spent a lot of the day away from home, but this weekend she's done pretty good and she's peeing in the potty almost every time now. She won't pee in a regular toilet, even with an Elmo potty seat to go on it, but as long as it's less than 2 hours that we're away from home, she can usually hold it. YAY! We're working on number 2 still, but Saturday she actually went in the potty and got an ice cream cone for it (2 M&Ms for peeing, a whole ice cream cone for pooping--how's that for bribery?). Hopefully she keeps this up! Adios diapers!! :)
Rachel is becoming a computer nerd, just like her daddy. My visiting teacher told me about Starfall and how her daughter loved playing on that website, so I checked it out, and now any time anyone is on the computer she comes over and says "un ettuh" or "two ettuhs" (one letter/two letters). We'll open up the abc's on Starfall and she'll pick a letter or two (or more if Dad is the one she's suckered into it--he's a pushover) and watch the little cartoons/slides for the letters. She loves it.
Rachel has been getting her legs stuck in her crib rails lately, I think as she tries to climb them to get out. So I was thinking about finding a bed rail and taking off the side of the crib (it's a convertible crib) to make it a toddler bed. Unfortunately bed rails for convertible cribs are rare and more than $70 everywhere I've seen, so when my mom saw this bed at a garage sale for $25 she got it, figuring it's cheaper than the rail, and serves the same purpose. Rachel loves it, though I'm a little hesitant to let her sleep on it at night, fearing that she'll get up and play at 4 am just because she can. But right now she's in there napping on it--she went down right away when I put her in there for naptime, so maybe there's hope for nighttime. Besides sleeping, though, she LOVES it as a place to read books, bounce, and play.
Lastly, our garden continues to produce pretty well. Our peas died once it got too hot, but now we have yellow squash going strong, plenty of tomatoes, a few watermelon, cucumbers, and cantaloupe on their way, and too many green beans. Jake and I both decided we don't like green beans much, but Rachel will eat the little beans inside--I think she thinks they're peas--but not the whole string bean. I won't be planting those next year.
So there's our nice looooooong update. Maybe I should get on the computer more often and write about one or two things at a time, instead of one HUGE entry. We'll see how that goes....

Ylena Leanora Campbell

Saturday night my first niece ever was born! Meet Ylena Leanora Campbell.
Isn't she cute?!
And here are the proud parents, Ashley and Mark:
Grandma and Grandpa and Aunt Lisa saying hi to Lenalee (that's what they plan to call her, though I'm not sure how it should be spelled). Lenalee woke up to say hi for a minute before dozing off again.

Dad and Aunties fawning over the cute little girl.
Here's the happy mom. After more than a day of labor and a C-section with not enough pain meds, she's quite the trooper, and doing much better now. Good job, Ashley.
And here's the proud papa:And Aunt Colette with my new niece.
We're glad they timed it just right so we could be in Utah and see our new niece while we were up here for Andrew and Heidi's wedding. She's a cutie.

Wedding festivities

It has been a weekend full of fun. On Friday my brother-in-law, Andrew, got married in the Mt. Timpanogos temple to Heidi.
They are such a cute couple. And Heidi was a beautiful bride!

Here's the whole family on both sides: 11 kids in Heidi's family, and 7 in Andrew's (though a few were missing for various reasons).
The happy couple with the Campbell kids, minus Cari, who's on a mission in Alaska, and Mark and Ashley who went straight from the wedding to the hospital to have a baby--they didn't even wait for pictures! ;)
What are dads for? Filling up the wallet, so their kids can empty it.Rachel had a ball running around this "big circle" while we waited outside after the ceremony.
And here's a family picture of our own.
It was a full, but fun day! Congratulations Andrew and Heidi!

Old Tucson Studios

Saturday we had the pleasure of enjoying a company picnic put on by Jake's company out at Old Tucson Studios. Free food, and free admission. Can't beat that. :) I hadn't been to Old Tucson since I was probably 6 or maybe 8, and there was a huge fire since then that burned it mostly down, so I didn't know how much was still the same (not that I really remembered much, anyway). It was a nice day for June-in the low 90's-hot, but not unbearably so. It turned out to be a nice afternoon. Here are a few highlights:

Jake and Rachel enjoyed their imprisonment in the Sheriff's office. Rachel especially liked the bed and climbed up on it to take a nap (or pretend to).
There are a plethora of movies that were filmed here, like The Three Amigos, Tombstone, and several John Wayne movies.

We got to ride the train that circles the place. Rachel loved the train.
Here's an attractive picture of our hygienic child.
Rachel loved the horses that were around, and got to pet these horses while they were stopped waiting for new customers for the stagecoach tour.
Rachel riding in style.
Here we are manning the Land Office.
And Rachel panning for gold. She was more interested in playing in the water than anything.
I think this is part of El Guapo's estate:

We also rode the carousel several times (which Rachel loved almost more than anything else, besides the train ride) and enjoyed a fun afternoon together.

And lastly, and unrelated to Old Tucson, a quick photo of Rachel's "uh-oh face":

This is what she does when she's about to cause an "accident", like knocking down her tower that is tall, tall, tall. She'll make the face, say "uh oh, uh oh," then knock it all over. Oops.

Camping at Patagonia Lake

I finally got some pictures from our camping trip a few weeks ago. So here are some highlights:

Savannah, Rachel, my mom, and Todd excited to try out the new boat and innertubes.

Rachel freaking out on the boat with me and Todd. She didn't much like the life jacket.
It was a little more acceptable to wear the life jacket if she got to splash in the water, too.
Hey, she reached 16 (months) a couple of months back. She's over due to be driving. Now anytime she sees the front seat she wants to get in and says "driving?"

It was cold in the morning, so we were in jackets. And Rachel "borrowed" Grandpa's do-rag for a good portion of the morning. She thought she was so cool.
As fun as it was being in nature, she asked a few times to play in the pack-n-play. She stayed in there for close to 30 minutes playing with her beach toys.

The second day Rachel went out on the boat with Jake and me and had a better time than her first trial the day before. The weather was much better the second day, too, so it wasn't windy or cold-it was perfect, sunny weather, but not too hot.We chased ducks in the boat, but they were too dumb to come get our bread we were trying to feed them. Back on shore, though, we found a momma duck with a bunch of babies. Here are just a few of them.

Rachel had a ball feeding them. Even when they were gone she kept saying "more?" asking for more bread to throw into the water. She didn't really care about feeding the ducks as much as throwing some food around, I guess. After swimming for a while, she had to go try to steal some of Grandpa's ice.
Overall, camping was lots of fun, though I didn't get as much sleep as I'd have liked because I kept getting up to see if Rachel was still covered by blankets with all the moving around she was doing (it was cold). She did great, even sleeping without the pack-n-play, which wouldn't fit with our air mattress in there, too. I thought she might want to run around the tent playing since she wasn't confined to a crib, but she just laid right down and fell asleep. The sun did wake her up a couple hours earlier than normal, but who gets a full night's sleep while camping? (Besides my mother, I guess). I'm glad we got to go camping together before Todd and Savannah abandon us for a new job in San Francisco.

Snowman

"No-man, no-man. Tall, tall. Mehtud mehtud, mah mah." Translation: once there was a snowman, snowman, snowman. Once there was a snowman tall, tall, tall. In the sun he melted, melted, melted. In the sun he melted small, small, small. Rachel does it complete with actions. And at the most random times. It's funny.
