Ryan was excited for a good track and field season. He did great at his first meet of the season.
The following Monday, while he was in PE, some kid was crouched down, tying his shoe or something, and stood up exactly as Ryan was running by and the back of his head crashed in to Ryan's cheek, laying him down flat. He felt a bit nauseous and dizzy, but never lost consciousness. I thought we should get him checked out, just to make sure there was no concussion, so I picked him up from school and took him to the Urgent Care where he got an x-ray. The xray was inconclusive, so they sent us to the ER for a CT scan where they could see that two of his face bones under his left eye are broken. He had no eye problems (which is the main concern with an orbital fracture), no concussion, and had taken only one dose of ibuprofen shortly after I picked him up from school Monday because he didn’t have any pain. Overall, things were good for having a broken face.
We followed up with a specialist the following day, and he thankfully did NOT need surgery, but does need to be careful to not have further injury. He had to miss the rest of track season and PE for the rest of the school year, which was a bummer because he would have been a top performer in track this year. He got a shiner and a numb lip that mostly went away as the swelling in his sinus cavity dissipated over the next few weeks. He was thankful for no surgery and that he would still be able to swim after the soft tissue swelling went down.
In other news, Ryan was recognized at the Principal's breakfast for getting straight As this year. I'm proud of his hard work and doing what it took to accomplish this feat.
We're glad Ryan has good friends to associate with! Carter and Jesse also were recognized at the Principal's breakfast.
